Girl raped after being sprayed with liquid

A 19-YEAR-OLD girl was raped by a man who sprayed her with a liquid, causing her to fall off her motorcycle and break her arm, reported Harian Metro.

In the 1.45am incident on Monday, the teenager was riding pillion on the motorcycle driven by her friend near Jalan Pasir Pedamar in Teluk Intan when another motorcyclist drew up beside them, brandishing a spray can. The man sprayed them with liquid from the can, causing the friend to lose control of the motorcycle.

Teen held over rape attempt

GEORGE TOWN: A 15-year-old boy was caught and beaten up by a security guard after he and an accomplice tried to rape a 28-year-old woman in a public toilet at the Komtar bus terminal here.

The woman, who works with an express bus company, had earlier gone to the first-floor toilet at around 9.15pm on Saturday when the two rushed in and threatened her with a knife. It is learnt that after demanding for her belongings to be handed over, they started fondling her private parts and threatened to kill her if she shouted for help.

However, when the woman spotted a male cleaner enter the toilet, she screamed, causing the duo to run off. A security guard, who waited at the exit after hearing the screams, managed to nab one of them.

Zainol Mat Saad said he hid behind an escalator to wait for the duo to run past him as it was near where the only exit was. “I managed to grab the boy but his accomplice ran off with the woman’s handbag,” said Zainol, who works with the same company as the woman, adding that the victim lost a handphone, necklace and RM50.

He said the boys might have been working in cahoots with another woman as the victim had told him that she only used the toilet when she saw the other woman enter it first. “But shortly after the woman left, the boys rushed in and closed the door,” he said. The victim lodged a report at the Patani Road police station.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the boy, who was sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment, had been placed under remand for four days. “We are looking for a man and a woman to facilitate investigations,” he added. Komtar assemblyman Ng Wei Aik said he would ask the Penang Development Corporation to fix panic buttons at the toilets in Komtar. “We have installed 50 closed-circuit television cameras in the building but it is impossible to fix them near the toilets,” he said.

Chief executive officer to PDC Setia Urus, which manages Komtar, Sabarul Aswadi Abdul Jalil said he would check if any of the CCTV had captured images of the duo.

Beware the property trap, Chong tells owners

KUALA LUMPUR: Do not break into your own property even if your tenant fails to pay the rent. It could be a trap. This was the warning given by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong to landlords who were thinking of doing this to reclaim their property.

Chong said any move by a landlord to break into the property, even when the tenant failed to pay the rent, was against the law. He said many landlords had been brought to court by tenants for breaking into their properties and were sued for the loss of their tenants’ assets including cash. “This could be a trap laid by tenants who are looking for easy cash. They could be conmen,” Chong told a press conference at his office in Wisma MCA here yesterday. In the past three months, three such claims were made by tenants – all of them Malaysians – against their landlords.

Their claims amounted to a total of RM117,000 in cash and assets. During the same period, he said he received 12 complaints of tenants who failed to pay a total of RM57,000 in rent. Lawyer Leong Pak Yiew, who is a member of the department, advised landlords facing this problem to file for a distress order at a court. “Under this order, landlords will be able to legally seize the premises and the tenant’s rent will be recovered through auctioning all assets found within it,” he said. However, this process could take up to two months and might be costly in terms of legal and court fees.

Home Security Tips

(1)Check on the possible entrances to your home that might be easily available to burglar. By doing so, you are able to improve your security system and better protect your house.

(2) Make sure to lock your main gate and entrances to your house when you’re out even for a short time. As always, burglar may just walk in through unlock door or window.

(3) Change all the locks and tumblers when you move into a new house.

(4) Conceal or hide all the wiring for the home security alarm system. Professional burglar may find every possible way to disconnect the alarm system.

(5) Switch on some lights in your house when you are out for a long time. Your house must appear occupied all the time to keep burglar at a distance.

(6) If you have a faulty alarm that frequently goes off, get it fixed immediately and tell your neighbors that it's been repaired. Many people ignore an alarm that goes off periodically.

(7) A spring-latch lock is easy prey for burglars who can slip in a plastic card against the latch tongue to depress it and unlock the door. A deadbolt defies any such attack. It is only vulnerable when there is enough space between the door and its frame to allow an intruder to use power tools or a hacksaw.

(8) Change the locks immediately if you lose your keys.

(9) Instead of keeping a spare key in a mailbox, under the doormat, or on a nail behind the garage, wrap the key in foil -- or put it in a 35mm film can -- and bury it where you can easily find it if you need it.

(10) Don't leave notes for service people or family members on the door. These act as a welcome notes for a burglar.

(11) If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing lighting with an infrared detector. Switch on the light at the entrance area at night will also help to keep away burglar. Most thieves don't want to be observed trying to get in a door.

(12) Keep a good relationship with your neighbors so that they can help look after your house when you’re away. Talk to your neighbors about any suspicious people or strange cars you notice lurking about.

(13) Trees located near windows or doors that might shield a burglar from view can be major flaws in your home-protection plan. Consider your landscaping plan in light of your protection needs.

(14) Do not let any strangers into your house. Sometime burglar may pretend to be a salesperson or someone asking for help to get a chance into your house.

(15) Dogs are good deterrents to burglars. Even a small, noisy dog can be effective -- burglars do not like to have attention drawn to their presence.

(16) Placing a warning board indicating that your house is protected by security system is a good deterrent to burglar. Logically they will try to break into house that is not guarded.

(17) Install the main gate type that can block the view into your garage or car park area. This will prevent the burglar from knowing whether your car is inside the house or not from afar.

(18) If you are out of the house for long period, make sure you lower the volume of your house phone. Some burglar may know you and call to check whether someone is at home or not.

Criminal Statistic in Malaysia

This is an interesting criminal statistic I obtained from the Department of Statistics Malaysia. You can get more free information of various statistical data from their official website http://www.statistics.gov.my/.

Criminals are everywhere. Be careful when you go out and even when you stay inside the house!

Burglar cornered on roof, keeps cops at bay for an hour

SUNGAI PETANI: A burglar kept police and residents at bay for nearly an hour after he fled to the rooftop of a house in Taman Ria Jaya here.

The burglar, in his 20s, threw roof tiles at anyone who tried to get to him. Some 200 residents, voluntary patrol team members and policemen had surrounded the house he had earlier broke into with an accomplice.

None of the flying tiles hit their mark. The situation was so tense that at one point, one of the policemen even whipped out his pistol when the thief picked up more tiles to hurl at them.

The standoff at 10pm on Tuesday lasted for nearly an hour before police managed to coax him down.

Many residents and passers-by also recorded the dramatic incident on their handphones.

The burglar, said to be “high” on cough mixture, was about to flee from the house when he and his accomplice were spotted by several passers-by.

His accomplice fled by motorcycle, leaving him behind to fend for himself. Nobody knew how he managed to find his way up to the rooftop, and he only surrendered after police assured him that he would not be harmed by the crowd.

However, as he was being led to the police truck, he was repeatedly hit on the head by a man who was nearly struck by one of the “flying” tiles earlier. A bag full of valuables was recovered from the rooftop.

Residents believe the two had committed burglaries in the area on several occasions prior to the incident.

Gated community...can it effectively guard off burglar?

Nowadays, a lot of property developers are offering gated community for landed properties. By forming a gated community, the housing area will be gated by brick walls with certain height and also at the entrance of the housing area, there will be a guard house for monitoring & checking of visitors in and out of the place.

Normally, there will be two or more security guards working by shift to watch over the entire housing area. It's interesting to note that some of these housing area will not have individual gate for the house because it's assumed to be safe enough with the guard monitoring at the main entrance.

Of course this type of service will not come for free. Inmates of this community need to pay a certain amount of maintenance fee every month which typically amounting to RM100++. Now you see that not only those staying in apartments and condominiums need to pay for monthly maintenance but also those staying in landed properties!

Well, this might continue to be a trend and for the potential house buyer, they may have no choice given the current situation but to choose a property that will at least give some peace of mind once they move in - no need to worry about their house being broken into and lose all their valuable belongings.

To answer the question on how effective the gated community can guard off burglar, we need to ask a few more questions as below:

(1) How well trained the security guard in ensuring the safety of the inmates and their home?
(2) Is there any way the inmate can alert the security guard in case or emergency?
(3) How is the checking of visitors in and out of the community is being performed?
(4) How many time the guard patrols around the housing area per day?
(5) Is there a way the burglar can get into the community through the brick wall?
(6) etc...

I asked these questions because I can see the vunerability of the homes in the community if any of these factors are not being considered properly. I had heard a case from my friend that his uncle's car actually got stolen even he stayed inside a gated community! After the incident, he refused to pay the monthly maintenance fee.

I am not saying that the gated community is useless in protecting the home of the inmates but I think much improvement needed in some of these projects so that the inmates can benefit fully from the service. I wish all of you have a home sweet home in year 2010.

Security alarm is a need nowaday...

I had a chat with my friend this afternoon during lunch time. As usual, our chat session consisted of a lot of topics. One of the topic that crossed my mind was about the renovation of my friend's new house. The double storey house costed him RM200k++ and close to RM300k including renovation. He mentioned that he had installed a security alarm system which costed him RM2k++ for both wired and wireless detector units and control panel.

One of the reason that prompted him to install the security alarm was the broke in case happened to his neighbour, not once but twice! This make me understand why he was willing to fork out that money - just in case!

It also made me realised that burglary case is getting more and more severe in Malaysia - in fact around the world. Nowadays, jobs are getting fewer and financial stress is getting higher and higher. We cannot deny that in most cases, we cannot do anything to get the burglar into justice. Therefore, the best way to avoid burglary is still by prevention.

I started to see it as a trend to install security alarm in house for safety reason. Some developers even go to the extend of building gated community for landed properties which we hardly heard about few years ago. This shows that secured home is really a necessity people are looking for. They don't just want a house, but a secured home.

In the near future, we may see more of these gated housing community being developed. I just hope that these gated housing community can prevent burglary cases and protect the inmates. After all, that's what a home should provides: a safe & comfortable place to stay & live happily.
